THE RIVER

Some callings arrive before questions.

She was born in time
when the river supplied her people all they needed.

Comfort lived in the rhythm of community.
Each had a place
She moved easily among them.
She went with the boys
to the water,
to the trees,
to wherever the day opened.
To the places that held her.

One day someone called her back.

Girl.

She stepped away from river,
From the water.
From the trees.

She never once asked why.
